Bayern were 2-0 up at half-time and never let Dortmund back into the game.

The visitors arrived in Munich second in the table and in decent form, but they were second best from the opening minutes. Bayern controlled the ball, pressed high and turned their pressure into goals before the break. After the restart they added two more and saw out the game without real danger at their own end.

The result keeps Bayern unbeaten after nine rounds and confirms them as the clear favourites for the title. For Dortmund, it was a reminder of how much ground they still have to make up.

1. The press

Bayern won the ball back in Dortmund’s half 14 times, their highest figure of the season.

The pressing was organised rather than frantic. Bayern’s forwards blocked the passing lanes into Dortmund’s midfield, which forced the visitors to play long or risk short passes under pressure. Several of the turnovers came within a few seconds of Dortmund goal kicks, and at least one led directly to a goal.

Dortmund tried to play through the press in the first half and paid for it. They switched to longer balls after the break, but by then the game was already gone, and Bayern were happy to sit a little deeper and wait for counter-attacks.

2. Kane again

Harry Kane scored twice and now has 14 league goals after nine rounds.

Both goals came from positions inside the penalty area, which says a lot about how often Bayern reached the box. Kane also dropped deep to link play, and his movement pulled Dortmund’s centre-backs out of position on several occasions. Michael Olise, with five goals and seven assists this season, was once again the main source of chances from the right.

Serhou Guirassy, Dortmund’s top scorer with eight league goals, had little to work with. He spent long spells isolated and rarely received the ball in the final third.

3. The gap

Bayern are six points clear of Dortmund. It is early, but the title race already looks one-sided.

The numbers support that view. Bayern have won eight of their nine games and drawn the other, with 30 goals scored and only six conceded. Dortmund have 18 goals for and 12 against, and they have now lost two of their last five league matches.

The bigger worry for Dortmund may be behind them rather than ahead. Bayer Leverkusen are only one point back in third and RB Leipzig two points behind in fourth. The two meet each other in the next round, which means at least one of them will close in on second place.

Where Dortmund went wrong

Dortmund’s problems were not only about Bayern’s pressing. Their back line defended too high for the pace of Bayern’s wide players, and the gap between defence and midfield was often too large. Each time Bayern won the ball, they found space between the lines almost immediately.

The visitors also struggled to keep the ball when they did win it back. Their passing accuracy in their own half was well below their usual level, and the midfield rarely had time to turn and look forward. Without a reliable outlet, the team could not relieve the pressure for more than a few minutes at a time.

  • Too much space between defence and midfield.
  • Short build-up from the back played straight into Bayern’s press.
  • Few clear chances: Dortmund did not test the Bayern goalkeeper seriously until the second half.
  • Guirassy was isolated and starved of service.

None of these issues is new, but this was the first time this season that a strong opponent exploited all of them in the same game. The coaching staff now have a clear list of what to work on.

What comes next

Bayern will look to keep their momentum going in the next rounds. With their main rival now six points back, the coming weeks give them a chance to build an even bigger cushion before the winter break, and the squad looks deep enough to rotate without losing quality.

Dortmund’s focus will be on reacting quickly. A heavy defeat in a game of this profile can affect confidence, and the coaching staff will want a strong response in the next league match. The early weeks of next month will show whether this was a one-off or a sign of a wider problem.
