Milan’s current number one has had an uneven start to the season. The club wants competition for the position rather than a direct replacement.

The team’s overall defensive record is good: Milan have conceded seven goals in nine Serie A games, one of the lowest totals in the league. But the staff feel that a few individual moments have cost points, and they want a second goalkeeper who can push for a starting place.

Why Milan are looking now

Milan are third in Serie A with 20 points, level with Inter and two behind leaders Napoli. Yesterday’s derby against Inter ended 1–1, a result that kept them in touch with the top of the table.

With the title race this close, the club believes that small margins will decide the season. A reliable alternative in goal is seen as a sensible investment, both for competition and as cover in case of injury.

The current back-up has played little this season, and the coaching staff would prefer a keeper with more first-team experience. That is the main reason the search has started before the window opens.

The shortlist

  • An experienced Serie A goalkeeper whose contract ends in June.
  • A young keeper from Ligue 1 who has impressed this autumn.
  • A loan option from a Premier League club.

The Serie A option

The experienced keeper knows the league well and would need no time to adapt. Because his contract ends in June, his club may accept a modest fee in January rather than lose him for nothing in the summer.

The downside is age. He would be a strong option for the rest of this season and perhaps the next, but he is not the long-term answer, and Milan would probably have to return to the market within two years.

The Ligue 1 option

The young keeper from France is the most interesting option for the long term. He has been one of the standout performers in Ligue 1 this autumn, but his club is unlikely to sell cheaply in the middle of the season.

Milan’s scouts have watched him several times this season. His club values him highly, and a deal in January would probably require a fee well beyond what Milan have available for the position. A summer move could be easier to arrange.

The Premier League loan

The loan option involves a keeper who is not a regular starter in England. He would get more playing time in Milan, and his parent club would cover part of his wages.

Such a deal would carry little financial risk. The question is whether a keeper who has played few minutes this season would be ready to challenge for a place in a team chasing the title.

The club’s budget for the position in January is limited, so a loan is the most realistic option.

Each option fits a different plan. The veteran would add experience straight away, the young keeper would be a signing for the future, and the loan would solve the immediate problem without affecting the summer budget.

What the club says

A club spokesperson said Milan do not comment on possible signings. The head coach has said in recent press conferences that he is happy with his goalkeepers but that competition for places is healthy in every position.

Any decision will also depend on outgoing transfers. If the current back-up leaves in January, Milan will have more room in the squad and in the budget to bring in a new keeper.

Supporters are divided on the search. Some believe the current number one only needs time to find his best form, while others would welcome a stronger challenge for the shirt.

The timeline

Milan’s sporting directors are expected to hold further talks with the coaching staff in the coming weeks before deciding which option to pursue. The window opens in January, and the club would like any new keeper to arrive early in the month so he can settle before the busy run of games that follows.

If none of the three options can be agreed on acceptable terms, Milan are prepared to wait until the summer, when they will have a larger budget and more time to find a long-term solution.
